METROPOLITAN TRANSPORT NETWORK EXPANSION IN THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO

The Metropolitan Urban Transport Company of the State of São Paulo (EMTU/SP) manages low and medium capacity transport in five metropolitan areas: Sao Paulo, Campinas, Baixada Santista, Vale do Paraíba and recently, Sorocaba, comprising 133 municipalities and 2.4 million passengers per day.

EMTU/SP is promoting the expansion of the network in 373.1 km via busways, BRTs and LRT, structuring existing routes and increasing coverage, frequency and quality of service. Intelligent transport systems will play a crucial role in the expansion, providing quality information for both operator and user, ensuring optimal performance and lessening the need for expensive investments.

Another key element in these new endeavours is the incorporation of greener solutions, reducing negative impacts on the environment. Concerning cleaner fuel alternatives, EMTU/SP is the leading company in testing new vehicle technologies, such as busses powered by ethanol, batteries and hydrogen.
